What are the dimensions of a 20’ container?
For easy stacking, containers have standard external sizes. The standard dimensions of a 20’ shipping container measures externally 20’ long, 8’ wide, and 8’-6” high. Internally, this container measures 19’-3” long, 7’-9” wide, and 7’-10” high. The material thickness causes the difference in size from external to internal measurements. The measurements can vary depending on material of the flooring used if modified from our standard shipping containers. The door frame dimensions are 7’-8” wide by 7’-6” high.
What is the internal capacity of a 20’ container?
The internal storage capacity of a 20’ is 1,169 cubic feet.
How much does a 20’ shipping container weigh?
There are 3 relevant weights to consider which are painted on the outside of the container doors.
The container tare weight is the weight of the container without any contents. 20’ containers weigh approximately 5,000 pounds.
The container gross weight is the weight of the container + the maximum payload it can hold. In other words, the maximum total weight of the container. The maximum cargo weight is 67,200 pounds.
The payload (net weight) is the weight of the cargo or contents that a container can hold. The maximum cargo weight is 67,200 pounds.
Can I rent a 20’ shipping container?

How should I maintain my 20’ container?
Monthly inspections of your container will extend the lifespan of your shipping and storage container.
Start from the outside, checking the structure for dents, chipped paint, debris, rust, leaks. Small repairs like weather stripping and calk are a simple fix. Keep the door hinges and locking bars adequately lubricated. Before you put anything inside the container, ensure the contents are dry and moisture free to reduce moisture build up inside your container. Can I modify my 20’ container?
Yes, 20’ shipping containers are often converted for uses other than shipping and basic secure storage. Our modification and gallery pages show some of the ways we can modify your container to fit your needs.
HOW MUCH CAN I FIT IN A 20-FT CONTAINER?
A 20-ft long container can generally fit about 25, 28 and sometimes 37 cubic meters (cbm) worth of goods inside. Of course, this depends on the size and shape of the goods themselves. Plus, some larger boxes don’t stack as well as smaller boxes. Keep in mind also that we are talking about the inside capacity, rather than the cargo volume loadable that will be less due to air space left among the cargo packages.
What is TEU?
TEU is a common term in the shipping container industry. It stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit. But remember, it’s a unit not a container. The unit denotes space or capacity in equivalent to a 20 foot shipping container. It is used to determine the capacity of container vessels, throughout of terminals, etc. Think of it this way, a container ship with nominal capacity of 6000 TEU means it has enough space for 6000 container 20ft. It can also stand to reason that a 40ft container is considered 2 TEU’s. There is a less common term that is sometimes used, and it is 1 FEU (Forty-foot Equivalent Unit).
